Grease traps are an essential component of any commercial kitchen or dining establishment. They help to promote a healthy environment and effective drainage. But like anything in your kitchen, your grease traps need to be cleaned regularly to keep them working properly.

Without regular grease trap servicing, the accumulation of food solids such as grease, oils and fats can cause blockages, backups and foul odours which can lead to health code violations. At Tropical Coast Plumbing, we understand how important it is for your business to meet health and safety codes and the role your grease trap plays in this.

So, to help you stay compliant, we’ll guide you through our grease trap servicing process.

Importance of Grease Traps and Servicing

As we just briefly touched on, grease traps play a vital role in preventing sewage blockages and contamination from fats, oils and grease. They do this by catching them as they pass through the trap. But over time, the trap can become full and clog due to large quantities of solidified grease. This can reduce their effectiveness in catching any other solids that pass through, and also can heighten the risk of blockages and health hazards.

By regularly cleaning and servicing your grease trap, you can keep the grease levels down and keep your trap functioning at a high and safe level to ensure your business is safe and fully compliant with health and safety regulations.

The Grease Trap Servicing Process

While you can clean most things in your kitchen yourself, your grease trap is one fixture that is best left to the experts. Properly cleaning grease traps and responsibly disposing of food solids requires specialised equipment and training.

Our technicians at Tropical Coast Plumbing for example, are fully trained and have all the required tools to safely and effectively clean grease traps. Our simple three-step process ensures that your grease trap is clean and all debris is disposed of properly:

1. Pumping Out the Grease Trap

The first thing we do is pump out the contents of the trap. We coordinate with the appropriate waste management providers to get everything pumped out of the trap and ensure it is disposed of responsibly. By emptying the trap, this allows us greater access to the interior to deep clean it.

2. Deep Cleaning

Once the trap is empty, we can then deep clean it to remove any remaining solidified grease or fat that is stuck to the sides or bottom of the trap. We do this by scrubbing the walls, baffles and basket to remove any stubborn traces of fats, oils and grease. And to provide peace of mind in this process, we always use specialised equipment and safe cleaning agents that won’t damage or contaminate the water.

3. Refilling and Testing

Once we’ve cleaned and removed all of the caked on fats, we can then refill the trap with water. We then test it and check for any damages, leaks or blockages and make any required adjustments or repairs to ensure it is operating properly. Once any necessary repairs have been completed and the trap is refilled, it is fully functional and ready to use.

Grease Trap Servicing Schedule

Having a grease trap servicing schedule will help ensure you’re always compliant with the necessary regulations and have a safe and healthy business. However, the frequency at which you get your trap cleaned and serviced can depend on factors such as the size of your trap and the volume of grease that is used in your kitchen.

For a general guide to get you started, it’s recommended to service your grease trap at least every three to six months. However, if you have a large kitchen that uses a high-level of grease then it may be a good idea to clean it more frequently.

When our team cleans out your trap we will assess the amount of grease buildup that is there and recommend a schedule for you to follow going forward to help ensure the quality of your trap and that you stay compliant.

Keep Your Commercial Kitchen Working Smoothly

By scheduling regular services and cleaning for your grease trap you can maintain its functionality and minimise the chances of needing costly repairs or services down the line to handle clogs or damage.

At Tropical Coast Plumbing, we have all the tools and skills needed to keep your grease trap clean and functioning as it should to safeguard your business. So, whether you’re a restaurant owner, a commercial kitchen manager, or a facility maintenance professional, we can tailor our services to your needs and help you stay compliant.
